Ports of Indiana received a USD 25 million federal grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Build program to fund a USD 32 million expansion at the Port of Jeffersonville.
This support is the largest granted by the federal government in Ports of Indiana's 65-year history, more than doubling the previous maximum for any terminal in the state.
It also represents the largest infrastructure investment at the Port of Jeffersonville since its inauguration in 1985, more than doubling the facility's general cargo capacity and increasing its lifting capacity from 35 to 300 tons.
"Indiana's ports are essential to keeping our economy moving, and this USD 25 million Build grant represents a significant investment in our state's future. Expanding our Jeffersonville port's capacity for river, rail, and truck cargo will create new opportunities for Indiana manufacturers, farmers, and businesses, while driving high-quality jobs across southern Indiana," stated Indiana Governor Mike Braun.
The Build (Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development) program is administered by the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) to award grants to surface transportation infrastructure projects with a significant local or regional impact. This week, the agency awarded USD 1.73 billion in Build grants to 127 projects out of 1,200 applications.
The grant for Jeffersonville will fund a major redevelopment of an underutilized area along the Ohio River to transform it into a high-volume multimodal terminal. The project includes a new 300-ton crane system, a 604-square-meter dock, and a 2,044-square-meter warehouse designed to improve operational efficiency and expand heavy and breakbulk cargo capacity.
"This is a transformative project for our Port of Jeffersonville and for the entire Southern Indiana region. We deeply thank the Department of Transportation for this contribution, as well as our federal, state, and local port partners who made this project possible," declared Jody Peacock, Executive Director of Ports of Indiana.
"This investment will dramatically increase the port's capacity to handle steel and larger project cargoes, improve operational and storage efficiency, reduce transportation costs for regional industry, and solidify Jeffersonville's position as one of the Midwest's premier multimodal cargo hubs for decades to come," added Peacock.
Once completed, the expansion will increase lifting capacity by over 800%, double barge-to-rail transload capacity, and establish the port's first general cargo terminal located outside the flood zone. The project is expected to be completed in 2028.
"Strong infrastructure is essential for a strong economy, and this Build grant represents a significant investment in Indiana's future. Improvements at the Port of Indiana-Jeffersonville will increase efficiency, strengthen supply chains, and enhance the port's ability to serve businesses across our state and the Midwest. I am proud to have championed this project and congratulate all those whose hard work made this achievement possible," noted Congresswoman Erin Houchin.
