PortsPanama Canal Celebrates 112th Anniversary as Traffic Rises Amid Water Concerns
The Panama Canal marked its 112th anniversary with vessel traffic rising 6.1% to 10,623 deep-draft transits during the first ten months of fiscal year 2026, according to the Panama Canal Authority (ACP). However, a strengthening El Niño is pressuring freshwater supplies, prompting the ACP to tighten draft restrictions at Neopanamax locks. The canal is also advancing its 2025–2035 strategic vision, including container transshipment terminals at Corozal and Telfers, and a 76-kilometer Energy Corridor pipeline for propane, butane and ethane transport.
