AET's Eagle Hydra, the last vessel in the Eagle H-Class vessel modernization program for 2025-26, completed a series of energy efficiency improvements during its recent shipyard stay.
The Eagle Hydra modernization project, a milestone in history, completes the first comprehensive deployment of Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) across the fleet. AET will expand the application of VFDs to other vessels in the fleet, with four additional deployments scheduled for 2026.
The installation of VFDs on the ship's main energy consumers, including engine room fans and cooling water pumps, is expected to generate annual fuel savings of approximately 150 tons and a consequent reduction in emissions. The return on investment from fuel savings is estimated to occur in approximately two years.
In addition to the VFD installation, Eagle Hydra underwent a series of additional energy efficiency improvements, including the fifth installation of the Propeller Boss Cap Fin (PBCF) in AET's Eagle H-Class fleet for 2025-26, which will improve propeller efficiency by reducing hub vortex losses; X-GIT graphene propeller coating, to reduce propeller surface roughness and friction, which contribute to fuel consumption; and low-friction hull coating, to improve performance.
AET's top-tier modernization program, carried out through close collaboration with MISC Marine, the ship's team, and our project partners, is extending proven and scalable efficiency measures across the entire fleet to contribute to the achievement of AET's Decarbonization Strategy.
