Bechtel received limited notice to proceed (LNTP) from Cheniere for the Sabine Pass Liquefaction (SPL) plant in southwest Louisiana, allowing one of the next major expansions of U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) export capacity to enter the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) phase. Full construction is anticipated to begin in early 2027.
Reflecting on the significance of this milestone, Paul Marsden, President of Bechtel's Energy business, stated that "the decision to move forward with Train 7 at Sabine Pass reflects something more important than a single project: it marks the beginning of the next phase of growth for U.S. energy infrastructure. As global energy demand increases and countries seek secure and reliable supply, LNG will continue to play a critical role in the energy mix for decades to come."
"The Sabine Pass project helped solidify the United States as a global leader in LNG ten years ago, and this milestone demonstrates how that leadership continues to evolve. Over the last decade, Bechtel and Cheniere have shown what is possible when world-class execution is combined with a long-term vision: delivering complex infrastructure safely, predictably, and at scale," Marsden added.
The SPL expansion project builds on nearly two decades of collaboration between Bechtel and Cheniere at Sabine Pass. Between 2005 and 2009, Bechtel designed, built, and expanded the original LNG receiving terminal, laying the groundwork for its transformation into the first large-scale LNG export facility in the United States.
Between 2016 and 2022, Bechtel delivered six liquefaction trains at Sabine Pass, adding approximately 30 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of export capacity and contributing to the launch of the modern U.S. LNG export industry. Today, at the Corpus Christi Stage 3 mid-scale trains, Bechtel continues to drive one of the largest ongoing LNG expansions globally, including delivering Train 1 to Cheniere's operations team more than six months ahead of schedule.
Currently, Sabine Pass features six liquefaction trains, LNG storage tanks, three marine berths, and supporting infrastructure, positioning the facility as a hub for U.S. LNG exports.
