Shipping Industry Issues Stark New Hormuz Transit Guidance as Risks Mount
The global shipping industry released a 22-page advisory jointly issued by BIMCO, International Chamber of Shipping, INTERTANKO, OCIMF, INTERCARGO, and IMCA, warning that conditions in the Strait of Hormuz may be too dangerous for safe navigation despite the waterway remaining technically open. The guidance warns vessels may face kinetic threats, electronic warfare, heavy congestion, mines, drones, and AIS spoofing simultaneously, and recommends operators continuously reassess whether transit is necessary and consider deferment if security risks increase.
