The Regional Directorate of Punta Arenas and Carabineros have seized a total of 7,137 products, including backpacks, bags, toys, notebooks, and various other merchandise, through joint operations during the first quarter of 2026.
"There have been 28 procedures carried out in different commercial establishments and malls in the Magallanes Region, which have allowed the removal of various items that were being sold to the public, but which mostly infringed Chilean intellectual and industrial property regulations," the regional public service reported.
For his part, the Director of Punta Arenas Customs, Reinhold Andronoff, explained that "this type of operation is extremely relevant because one of our roles as a public institution is to prevent these products, which do not have the corresponding approvals and are counterfeit, from reaching the hands of the public."
"With this, we not only prevent tax evasion due to non-payment of taxes, but also ensure that Chileans are not exposed to goods that could harm their health. Furthermore, we support legitimate trade by preventing the proliferation of unfair competition that does not comply with all existing legality," he added.
In this regard, this type of seizure has allowed the various brands whose products have been infringed by being sold as counterfeits, to take appropriate legal action and file complaints against those who may be responsible.
General Marco Alvarado, Head of the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctic Zone, stated that "this coordinated work with the National Customs Service reflects the permanent commitment of Carabineros de Chile to the protection of citizens and the fight against illicit trade in the Magallanes Region. Through joint inspections, we have managed to detect and seize a significant quantity of counterfeit products and goods illegally brought into the country, thereby preventing the circulation of articles that violate current regulations and, in many cases, may pose a risk to people."
"As an institution, we will continue to strengthen these inter-institutional actions, aimed not only at combating crimes associated with smuggling and intellectual property, but also at safeguarding established trade and providing greater security to the community," he complemented.
It should be noted that the National Customs Service is authorized to carry out inspections of commercial establishments and can conduct post-import controls. It can analyze tax information and verify on-site that foreign trade processes and regulations are being complied with.
"This is carried out through planned and coordinated inter-institutional work for the control of goods that are for sale in commerce and that may have been brought in through unauthorized crossings," Customs specified.
