Puerto Coronel hosted the inaugural call of a newly built Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) container ship, the MSC Senegal, at Berth 5/6. This was part of its first voyage through Chile. The vessel, delivered in November 2025 by New Times Shipyard (NTS), arrived at the port facility located in the Bio Bio Region, fulfilling the route of the Alpaca service, which connects Asia with the west coast of South America (Chile and Peru) on a weekly basis. The vessel's stay, with a capacity to transport 8,496 TEU and registered under the Liberian flag, will extend until the morning of Monday, August 10, as stated in the maritime station's shipping schedule. In line with the shipping company's voyage program, the MSC Senegal will sail to Rodman, Panama, as part of the route planned within the NWC-USA-SAWC service. The MSC Senegal, with dual-fuel liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion, is the latest unit in a series of 10 container ships commissioned by MSC, which began to be delivered at the end of 2024. All vessels are named after African countries, such as Togo, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, or Ghana. The newly built ultracompact vessel was designed by SDARI and is equipped with a large wraparound wind deflector on the forecastle. It is powered by a MAN B&W 7G80ME-C10-coEGR main engine, allowing it to reach a maximum speed of 21 knots.
