The International Maritime Organization and the World Maritime University have published a new manual aimed at promoting the incorporation of a gender perspective in the international maritime sector. The initiative seeks to strengthen the participation of women in activities related to maritime transport, ports, logistics, and ocean governance, in a context where women represent less than 19% of the global maritime workforce and barely around 1% of seagoing personnel worldwide.
The document provides technical and methodological guidelines for maritime administrations, shipping companies, port authorities, and academic institutions to integrate equal opportunity policies into their organizational structures and operational processes. Furthermore, the manual addresses strategies to expand access to specialized training, leadership, and professional development within the maritime industry, which is considered strategic for international trade and global logistical connectivity.
The publication reflects the growing relevance of social sustainability and diversity criteria in the competitiveness of the international maritime and port sector. The incorporation of inclusive approaches could contribute to institutional strengthening, operational innovation, and the generation of specialized talent, factors increasingly important for the resilience of logistics chains, the efficiency of maritime transport, and the sustainable development of the global economy.
