A liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessel, operated by the Greek shipping company GasLog, is stable after experiencing an incident while exiting the Strait of Hormuz. All crew members on board are safe and accounted for, the company reported.
In a statement, GasLog noted that an "incident" occurred on July 31 on its LNG carrier Gaslog Shanghai. The company did not provide details about what happened or clarify whether the vessel or its cargo sustained any damage.
"GasLog LNG Services immediately activated its emergency plan, notified all relevant authorities, and is currently assessing the vessel's conditions to ensure the safety of our personnel," the statement said.
According to maritime tracking data from analytics firms Kpler and LSEG, the Gaslog Shanghai had loaded liquefied natural gas at the Ras Laffan export terminal in Qatar between July 27 and 28.
The data showed that the vessel was located within the Strait of Hormuz on July 31, before reappearing outside the waterway on August 2.
Satellite tracking information indicates that the vessel is currently off the Musandam Peninsula, in Oman, just outside the Strait of Hormuz.
The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial shipping route for oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports from Gulf producers. Nearly a fifth of the world's LNG passes through this waterway, including most shipments from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
Iran has largely closed the Strait of Hormuz since the start of the war with the United States, which began in February, leading to a surge in energy prices and fueling broader global inflation.
On Saturday, August 1, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency indicated that it received reports of two maritime incidents off Oman, including one in which an oil tanker was hit by an unknown projectile. Both events occurred off the Musandam Peninsula, Oman.
On Sunday, August 2, the UKMTO stated that it had received a report from the captain of an oil tanker about an explosion very close to the vessel, about 20 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, Oman. According to the agency, the vessel and its crew were reported to be safe.
The previous reported incident involving an LNG carrier near the Strait of Hormuz occurred on July 7, when the impact of a projectile on the Qatari vessel Al Rekayyat caused a fire in its engine room, forcing its crew to evacuate.
