Qatar condemned an Iranian attack on a Qatari vessel near the Strait of Hormuz, urging Tehran to immediately stop actions that threaten maritime security and global energy supply.
In a statement on the American social network X, Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari stated that the aggression against the Qatari-owned liquefied natural gas (LNG) transport vessel Al Rekayyat, while transiting near the strategic waterway, constituted "an unacceptable attack on the security and safety of international maritime navigation."
Majed al-Ansari noted that the attack also threatened global energy supply and amounted to "a serious and explicit violation of international law," particularly the rules guaranteeing freedom of navigation and safe passage through international waterways.
"We demand that the Islamic Republic of Iran immediately cease all practices that undermine regional security or threaten the protection of international maritime navigation, and that it refrain from endangering global energy supplies and the resources of the countries in the region in pursuit of petty interests," Ansari declared.
The spokesman added that Qatar holds Iran "fully legally responsible" for the attack and for the resulting damages and consequences. According to reports, the Al-Rekayyat was one of two commercial vessels hit near the Strait of Hormuz by Iranian missiles while transiting the maritime route late on Monday, June 6, causing significant damage but no casualties.
For its part, Iranian state television channel IRIB, citing unidentified sources, claimed that a Qatari oil tanker attempting to transit the Omani route through the Strait of Hormuz with the support of the United States Navy was attacked after ignoring repeated warnings from Iranian forces.
The waterway is one of the world's most important strategic energy choke points, through which a significant portion of global oil and LNG exports from Persian Gulf producers pass.
