For the first time in the Port of Valparaíso, Terminal Pacífico Sur (TPS) and Ultraport have jointly launched a labor competency certification project for operational middle management, aimed at recognizing the professional experience of port workers, training employees, and raising safety standards for various job profiles.
This project aims for operational excellence based on safety and quality of operation. The process is certified by ChileValora, a public body whose purpose is to improve worker employability and promote lifelong learning.
Competency certification is a formal state recognition that accredits employees with the skills and knowledge to perform a trade, regardless of whether these were acquired through experience, training, or formal education. At the same time, it is an opportunity to strengthen knowledge through training.
In the case of TPS, 29 people performing duties as Bonus Shift workers have already begun the process, which in its first stage will consider roles associated with middle management.
Rodrigo Cabrera, TPS People Manager, commented that "our strategic vision has people as one of its pillars, and the commitment we assume in this regard is to contribute to the professional development of each of our collaborators, so this competency certification project is a great opportunity to recognize the trajectory and experience in the different roles within port operations and, at the same time, incorporate our safety standards into the evaluation profiles and provide more tools to workers".
Ultraport, meanwhile, already had experience with Competency Certification processes in other ports and also in Valparaíso, between 2016 and 2025, but this time it will have a broader scope, with 80 collaborators to be certified.
David Álvarez, Ultraport Valparaíso Manager, stated that "at Ultraport, we strongly support competency certification because it recognizes and accredits all the capabilities and knowledge that each port worker possesses. It is a tool that goes beyond growing within the organization: it allows each person to project themselves and professionalize in the sector, officially validating their experience".
The certification process has two stages, theoretical and practical, and involves an external evaluation company, MG Certifica. The long-term objective for both TPS and Ultraport is to certify all their operational area employees.
