The Port of Iquique added two new calls from factory ships at its facilities. The vessels Maartje Theadora and Annelies Ilena were serviced at the Multi-operated Terminal belonging to Empresa Portuaria Iquique (EPI).
Both operations, combined, reached a volume of more than 6,810 tons of fish, including squid, jack mackerel, Pacific grunt, mackerel, and bonito, among other species.
According to the company, the extraction was carried out in international waters, outside the Chilean jurisdictional zone. The unloading and consolidation tasks require 12 work shifts, completing around 250 refrigerated containers ready for dispatch abroad.
The cargo is destined for markets in Africa and Europe. For example, they will unload their production in ports such as Bremerhaven, in Germany, recognized as one of Europe's main fishing logistics centers; and the port terminal of Abidjan, in Ivory Coast.
According to EPI, an element that adds strategic perspective to these operations is the incidence of the El Niño phenomenon, whose presence has shifted fish schools towards international waters adjacent to the northern coast of Chile. This opens the possibility of new calls in the short term. In fact, there is a high probability that the Maartje Theadora will return to the Multi-operated Terminal in the coming weeks for a new operation.
The state-owned company emphasized that services of this magnitude have an immediate impact on the local logistics chain, generating direct employment for port workers in the region and boosting all actors in the local port system. It is worth mentioning that Empresa Portuaria Iquique and Nexoport were involved in coordinating the operations.
