Authorities from the Port of Lobito were present at the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding between INEA (Angola's National Road Institute) and the company GAV Construções, which aims to develop studies and projects for the future West-East Highway. With an estimated length of 1,300 kilometers, the new road infrastructure will integrate the Lobito Corridor, connecting the coast with the eastern part of the country.
The route will traverse the provinces of Benguela, Huambo, Bié, and Moxico, and is expected to extend to the border with the Republic of Zambia.
The ceremony was presided over by the Minister of Public Works, Urbanism, and Housing, Carlos Alberto dos Santos, while the Port of Lobito delegation was led by the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Celso Rosas, accompanied by the Director of Infrastructure, Paulo Lima, and the company's delegate in Luanda, Ornelas Nunda.
This is a highly strategic project for the national and regional economy, designed to facilitate the flow of national production, strengthen logistical integration with neighboring countries, and improve the transport of goods along the Lobito Corridor.
During the event, Rosas highlighted that the country is thus taking a decisive step towards the realization of one of the largest and most ambitious road construction projects, underscoring the Executive's commitment to diversifying the national economy. "Our participation in this event demonstrates the Government's commitment to economic diversification, as this infrastructure will serve as a fundamental alternative and a complement to the Lobito Corridor railway line," he stated.
The manager emphasized that while the railway is the main pillar of goods transport, roads play a vital role in the overall success of the transport network. "The railway is the backbone, but without good roads, the Lobito Corridor cannot function," Rojas explained.
