The import of vehicle parts and spare parts, mostly originating from Asia, remains jeopardized due to blockades on the Buga-Buenaventura road corridor. Road closures and protests are creating pressure on available materials, and according to the Automotive Sector and Parts Association (Asopartes), daily losses for foreign trade are estimated to reach 92 million dollars.
It is worth noting that the Port Zone of Buenaventura is the gateway between Colombia and Asia, with its terminals concentrating the majority of imports from the East.
It has been estimated that the road closures have paralyzed approximately 57,000 tons of cargo. Of the total daily economic impact, about 69 million dollars correspond to imported products, while the other 23 million are for exports that, in some cases, have not even been able to reach the port for shipment.
Carlos Andrés Pineda Osorio, national president of Asopartes, stated that "what is happening on the road to Buenaventura not only affects foreign trade. We are talking about the possibility that thousands of workshops, distributors, and companies in the automotive sector will face difficulties in accessing essential spare parts and supplies to maintain the country's mobility. Each day of interruption increases pressure on inventories and logistical costs throughout the entire chain."
Currently, companies in this sector indicated that they have stock, but a prolonged blockade could generate adverse effects and scarcity. In response, the association called on the Government of Gustavo Petro to implement institutional mechanisms aimed at safeguarding Colombia's logistical corridors and critical infrastructure.
The association acknowledged the right to citizen protest; however, it also warned that mobilizations cannot disrupt mobility, productivity, formal employment, and investor confidence. In the same vein, the Association noted the need to diversify transportation methods and optimize the use of alternative routes for foreign trade.
