Chile's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Francisco Pérez Mackenna, met with the Ambassador of Bangladesh in the South American country, Tauhedul Islam. The meeting took place within the framework of negotiations to finalize a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between both countries.
Details of the meeting were provided on the website of the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where it was reported that "this milestone is part of the ministry's strategy to diversify markets by entering one of Asia's most dynamic economies."
"This effort is in addition to the negotiations Chile is holding with India to advance towards a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), as well as the process to reach such an agreement with the Philippines, which would make Chile the first Latin American country to have a commercial instrument of this nature with that country," the publication added.
Regarding the figures for commercial transactions between both countries, it was indicated that "it reached USD 310 million in 2025, achieving its highest value since records began. This trade is one of the most dynamic for Chile, growing at an average annual rate of 26% over the last two decades, suggesting that a trade agreement could further support this high degree of dynamism."
"In 2025, Chile exported 4,212 products to the world, but only 12 of them were destined for Bangladesh. That year, Chilean exports to that country totaled USD 41.8 million, concentrated mainly in iron and steel scrap, fish oil, dairy preparations, boric acid, cardboard, and fresh apples, highlighting the opportunities to incorporate more products and services into the export basket," it was added.
For his part, Foreign Minister Pérez Mackenna stated, "We want to open new markets for our products because that means more jobs for Chileans. With almost 200 million inhabitants and a dynamic economy with sustained growth, Bangladesh represents a huge opportunity for Chile that we must seize."
Finally, the minister indicated, "Bangladesh has 10 times more people than Chile. That is the size of the opportunities opening up for us in this new market. We want to move quickly towards a trade agreement so that our products can reach one of South Asia's most promising economies with greater force," concluded Pérez Mackenna.
