Prime Minister Rob Jetten visited Maasvlakte along with Boudewijn Siemons, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority. During a three-hour visit, he gained first-hand insight into the current situation of Rotterdam's logistics and industrial sectors.
Jetten first visited APM Terminals' container terminal. Container transport is one of the port's main activities and primarily involves food products, semi-finished products, and finished products, for both import and export. The conversation focused, among other topics, on the resilience and vulnerabilities of Dutch infrastructure.
The second part of the visit consisted of a discussion with various industry representatives about the investment climate. Many companies plan to invest hundreds of millions of euros in new sustainable production facilities but are concerned about whether these investments will generate sufficient benefits in the Netherlands.
In addition, they often face practical challenges such as electricity grid congestion and issues related to nitrogen emission permits.
Finally, Rob Jetten visited Holland Hydrogen 1, Europe's largest green hydrogen production plant. This Shell project is fundamental for the energy transition, and once completed, the plant will use renewable electricity generated by offshore wind farms to produce hydrogen.
The Port of Rotterdam Authority has allocated part of the Maasvlakte for this type of sustainable industry.
