China's first independently developed 16-megawatt TLP-supported floating wind power platform, named Haiyou Anlan, has been connected to the power grid of the Lufeng oilfield and is directly supplying green electricity, announced the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC).
Designed and built to withstand the extreme conditions brought by a super typhoon with sustained winds of up to approximately 220 kilometers per hour, the platform and its operation represent a significant advance for China's deep-water floating wind equipment technology, opening a new path for the development of offshore wind power in the country, according to the company.
Located about 136 kilometers off the coast, at the mouth of the Pearl River, north of the South China Sea, the wind platform has a height similar to that of a 110-story building and weighs 7,800 tons, with a swept area equivalent to 7.5 regulation football fields. The power is transmitted to the Lufeng oilfield's power grid via submarine cables. According to CNOOC, the facility is expected to generate 54 million kilowatt-hours of green electricity annually.
Compared to semi-submersible offshore wind platforms, the tension-leg platform (TLP) system allows for reduced steel consumption without compromising structural strength, thanks to its floating structure. Furthermore, according to the company, it reduces the maritime area occupied by the installation.
China's offshore wind resources are abundant and fundamental for the future growth of offshore wind power capacity. The company expects the project to save 15,000 cubic meters of fuel oil and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 35,000 tons annually.
