The Port of Gioia Tauro completed its first cold ironing power supply to a containership after receiving the 19,000 TEU MSC Mirja.
After berthing, technical personnel connected the vessel to the mobile shore power connection system using power cables. Once technical checks and the connection to the electrical substation were completed, the vessel switched off its auxiliary engines and was powered exclusively by the shore electricity grid, with a total capacity of approximately seven MW.
"Today, the Port of Gioia Tauro takes a step that marks a historic moment not only for our port but for the entire national port system. A mega containership switched off its engines while berthed, obtaining energy exclusively from the onshore electricity grid. We are not talking about a simply completed infrastructure, but a fully functional system at the service of shipping companies," declared President Paolo Piacenza.
Gioia Tauro continues to be a pioneer in the transformation of European ports, investing in technologies that reduce environmental impact and strengthen the port's attractiveness, making it increasingly efficient, sustainable, and integrated with major international logistics networks.
The project is part of the Port Authority's overall strategy to reduce emissions from port activities, in line with European directives on promoting clean energy in transport. The shore power connection system allows berthed vessels to switch off their onboard diesel generators, which are normally used for operation while in port, thereby eliminating atmospheric emissions and significantly reducing noise pollution.
The shore power electrification project represents one of the most significant energy investments currently underway in the Italian port system. To power berthed vessels, the Port Authority's project aims to increase electricity availability to 80 MW. This requirement is complemented by that of Medcenter Container Terminal SpA (MCT), the container terminal concessionaire, which has launched an ambitious plan to electrify its operational infrastructure, including automatic stacking cranes (ASC) and the modernization of electric quay cranes (STS), to obtain an additional 80 MW.
Overall, the project involves expanding the connection to the national high-voltage grid intended to serve both the Port System Authority and MCT, for a total power of 160 MW.
