With a volunteer day that brought together collaborators from San Antonio International Terminal (STI), students, teachers, and the Fundación Mi Parque team, the renovation project of the Juan Dante Parraguez High School patio concluded. This initiative was promoted by STI in alliance with Mi Parque and developed participatively with the educational community.
The initiative transformed a central space for the educational community, incorporating new meeting and rest areas, an outdoor amphitheater-style classroom, picnic areas, ping-pong tables, swings, shade structures, vegetation, trees, and sectors specially designed for the daily use of students and staff. During the day, STI volunteers and members of the educational community planted trees and nearly 400 plant species.
The general manager of the port terminal, Andrés Albertini, highlighted that "the future of San Antonio lies in its children and youth, which greatly motivates us to contribute so they can grow in better spaces. As STI, we have reclaimed plazas in the commune and developed competitive funds that have supported initiatives of social organizations and educational establishments, and today we take a new step with this project at Juan Dante Parraguez High School. I congratulate Irene, its director, for the tremendous work she does, and as a company, we are happy to contribute with a place that invites her students to meet, learn, and enjoy their surroundings."
The activity marked the close of a nearly four-month collaborative work process, which included diagnostic workshops, participatory design, and construction with students, teachers, and school staff, allowing for the development of a proposal in line with the needs and ideas of those who use this space daily.
The director of the establishment, Irene Álvarez, stated that "for our educational community, this project has enormous significance. Today we have a more comfortable and functional environment for our educational community, which promotes coexistence, outdoor activities, and the development of learning experiences in an environment that they themselves helped to visualize."
From Fundación Mi Parque, the Project Coordinator, María José Sáez, maintained that "the project demonstrates the value of participatory design, since when the community is part of the decisions and then participates in the construction, places are created that truly respond to their needs and are appropriated and cared for by those who use them."
The day concluded with the official inauguration of the patio and a gathering among the participants, initiating the use of a space that will benefit more than 400 people, including students and members of the educational team.
