Representatives of the National Confederation of Port Workers (Conatraport) went to the National Congress, in Valparaíso, to hold meetings with some authorities and address the conflict related to the delivery of promised special pensions. The union organization will await the progress of efforts to unblock the problem that generated a mobilization in different ports of Chile.
In this context, Gabriel Rebolledo, coordinator of Public Relations, Communications and Networks of Conatraport, explained that "we are asking the Government for an equitable distribution of the 250 special pensions that the sector has. We have had various meetings in Congress with different deputies and also with Senator Gastón Saavedra, where we have been told to give the Government time to unblock the issue, because some ministers are trying to mediate, so we will wait for those efforts."
The confederation's representative stated that "we believe that the Government is making a serious mistake with discrimination in this regard, we are also evaluating with our legal teams the actions to follow if this situation is not resolved and that is why we are also talking with the senator so that he also takes steps to find a definitive solution and, obviously, unblock the conflict to be able to continue working normally."
"We are in a very complex situation as a country. The Imacec will soon be released and, if it is negative, we would enter a technical recession, and that is very serious for all workers and companies. We are looking for solutions in this regard and we do not want to resort to extreme mobilizations," Rebolledo affirmed.
"The special pensions for the sector under the agreement with Gabriel Boric are 150 pensions, we are seeking equality in this regard and, with the mediations being made, we are optimistic that we will reach a good agreement and, if not, we will activate the legal channels we have planned," indicated the coordinator.
For his part, the senator for the Bio Bio Region, Gastón Saavedra, commented that "this is an unnecessary conflict, first because this is an agreement that is in force between 2023 and 2026 that commits to 250 special pensions, therefore, port workers have an acquired right and this must be distributed among port workers, not privileging some and discriminating against others, which is the problem that the Government currently has and must resolve in some way."
"This can unnecessarily generate a major conflict in the country's port sector, which is highly sensitive for the country's ailing economy, which is on the verge of recession. Workers have their organizations, they must be respected, they arise democratically and the demands and commitments that governments acquire, they do so on behalf of the State, therefore, the validity of this agreement is what is being requested here," expressed Senator Saavedra.
