French luxury expedition cruise operator Ponant has conducted a detailed assessment of Iloilo City and the neighbouring island province of Guimaras as it considers expanding its Asian deployment to include additional ports of call in the Philippines. The inspection forms part of the company's ongoing evaluation of destinations capable of accommodating its small expedition vessels while offering high-quality shore experiences for international passengers.
Representatives from Ponant's shore excursion and port operations teams recently visited Western Visayas to examine port infrastructure, tourism facilities and excursion opportunities across the two destinations. The assessment was coordinated by the Department of Tourism–Western Visayas and included participation from Travel People, Wallem Philippines Shipping Inc. and Wilhelmsen-Smith Bell, providing the cruise line with a comprehensive review of operational capabilities and visitor experiences.
During the visit, the delegation evaluated port facilities, cultural and natural attractions, visitor services and the range of shore excursions available to expedition passengers. The findings will contribute to Ponant's decision on whether Iloilo City and Guimaras will be incorporated into future Asian itineraries.
The Department of Tourism considers the potential introduction of international expedition cruise calls an important opportunity for the regional economy. Officials indicated that each vessel arrival could generate business for transport providers, tour operators, accommodation establishments, restaurants, souvenir retailers, farmers, fisherfolk and other local enterprises while increasing the visibility of Western Visayas among international luxury travellers.
Tourism authorities also regard expedition cruising as an effective platform for showcasing the region's cultural heritage, gastronomy and natural landscapes to high-value visitors seeking destination-focused travel experiences. The initiative forms part of a broader strategy to establish Western Visayas as an emerging cruise destination and attract additional luxury and expedition operators, including Hapag-Lloyd Cruises.
For Ponant, the evaluation aligns with its continued expansion across the Asia-Pacific region, where the company operates small luxury expedition vessels designed to access destinations beyond the traditional cruise circuit.
