DRBA Completes $89 Million System to Protect Delaware Memorial Bridge

Officials from the Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) joined federal, state, and local officials, along with local community, business, and civic leaders to celebrate the completion of an innovative Ship Collision Protection System (SCPS), costing $89 million.

To protect the structural integrity of the Memorial Bridge from larger commercial vessels, the DRBA completed the installation of eight massive solid-fill fender cells, each 25 meters in diameter.

The event also celebrated the 75th anniversary of the First Span of the Delaware Memorial Bridge. The ceremony, attended by over 200 people, took place at Veterans Memorial Park in New Castle.

"The completion of this Ship Collision Protection System ensures that this iconic structure remains safe, resilient, and fully protected for the millions of travelers and commercial transporters who depend on us every day," stated Joel Coppadge, DRBA Executive Director.

"The Delaware Memorial Bridge is a vital economic artery for the entire Mid-Atlantic region. I am proud to continue working to secure federal investments like the $22.25 million Build grant, which will modernize the bridge and protect it against potential ship collisions, so we can protect not only the millions of people who cross it each year, but also the supply chains that drive our regional economy," indicated U.S. Senator Chris Coons.
