The Port of Motril will put its new automated border control system into operation, coinciding with Operation Crossing the Strait (OPE). This action represents a new step forward in the modernization of port infrastructures and in adapting to new European requirements for border control.
The project is part of the deployment of the European Entry/Exit System (EES) and the future ETIAS system, promoted by the European Union to strengthen security and improve the management of passengers from third countries.
The model implemented in the Port of Motril is similar to the one already operating in large international airports, such as Madrid-Barajas, through automated kiosks that allow for agile registration by scanning and verifying passport documents and capturing biometric data, such as facial images or fingerprints, among others.
In the port environment, the adopted solution is based on the installation of modules housed in shipping containers equipped with several automated kiosks. Passengers will be able to complete the registration process under the supervision of National Police agents, ensuring both security and the smooth flow of travelers.
The upgrade is funded by the Financial Support Instrument for Border Management and Visa Policy of the European Union, which covers approximately 75% of the equipment acquisition cost and 100% of its installation.
