Terminal Pacífico Sur (TPS) received the inaugural call of a newly built container ship from Mediterranean Shipping Company. This is the MSC Senegal, a unit deployed as part of the Alpaca service connecting the west coast of South America with Asia.
The vessel, whose most notable feature is its wind shield, was launched in November 2025 and then delivered by the Chinese shipyard New Times Shipyards.
The container ship, which called at berth 1 of the Port of Valparaíso, has a capacity of 8,496 TEU, a length of 260 meters, a beam of 45.6 meters, and a deadweight of 102 thousand tons.
Another characteristic of this container ship is its dual-fuel propulsion with liquefied natural gas (LNG), being the last unit in a series of ten vessels ordered by MSC.
The Senegal and its sister ships - such as the Togo, Cameroon, Ghana, or Ivory Coast, among others - began to join the shipping company from late 2024 and are part of MSC's enormous fleet which, between owned (758) and leased (247) vessels, possesses 1,005 units and a capacity to transport 7,359,459 million TEU.
The newly built ultra-compact vessel was designed by SDARI and is equipped with a large wraparound wind deflector on the forecastle. This container ship is powered by a MAN B&W 7G80ME-C10-coEGR main engine, allowing it to reach a maximum speed of 21 knots.
In Valparaíso, the MSC Senegal will perform 1,191 export container movements. This vessel, which also handled 1,000 containers in the neighboring Port of San Antonio, will head to Puerto Coronel, where it is expected this Sunday, August 9th, at berth 5-6 of the South Pier.
