The crew of the LNG Saturn methanol tanker, managed by MOL Global Ship Management, received a letter of commendation in the "Honors for Exceptional Bravery at Sea" category, awarded by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for participating in the rescue operations of personnel affected by the sinking of the KM. Limadai 8 vessel in the Strait of Malacca, in November 2025.
"The recognition highlights the skillful maneuvering of the 288-meter-long vessel's crew in adverse sea conditions at dusk, which allowed the rescue of six survivors after more than six hours of continuous effort," MOL stated.
According to the company, this is the first time a vessel owned, managed, or operated by a Japanese shipping company has received this distinction.
Those honored with this recognition, established in 2007 to distinguish individuals or organizations who have demonstrated exceptional bravery in saving lives at sea or protecting the marine environment, are selected by the IMO council, based on evaluations by the chairs of the organization's committees and international maritime entities.
In 2026, more than 50 nominations were submitted worldwide, resulting in the selection of one Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea, two Certificates of Commendation, and 11 Letters of Commendation.
