Zhoushan Changhong International Shipyard (ZCIS) completed the delivery of the MSC Maria Renata, a 10,300 TEU containership equipped with dual-fuel liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion, to Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC).
This unit marks the beginning of a series of ten sister vessels that the Chinese shipyard is scheduled to deliver to MSC during 2026 and 2027. According to Alphaliner, the order was placed in August 2023 with a reported price of approximately USD 130 million per unit.
The MSC Maria Renata corresponds to the CIMC ORIC 10300 LNG design, being the first unit of its kind in history. This design constitutes a more compact version of the CIMC ORIC 11500 LNG model, of which MSC has already received ten units between 2025 and 2026, also built at ZCIS.
The dimensions of the new containership include a length of 299.95 meters, a beam of 45.6 meters (with 18 container rows), and a deadweight of approximately 125,000 tons. The vessel is registered under the flag of Liberia.
A significant difference compared to MSC's larger sister vessels lies in the capacity for refrigerated containers. While the CIMC ORIC 11500 LNG vessels can carry up to 1,000 refrigerated containers (equivalent to 17% of their total capacity), the new 10,300 TEU vessels have space for 1,900 temperature-controlled boxes, representing 37% of their capacity.
Like its larger fleet mates built at ZCIS, the MSC Maria Renata is equipped with a large Type C LNG tank. Its design incorporates common features in contemporary containerships, including a large wrap-around wind deflector, a vertical bow without a bulb, a general double-island arrangement, and three-level high lashing bridges with triple Mickey Mouse ears.
The new containership will make its operational debut on the Ingwe route, connecting the Far East with South Africa. On this route, it will replace the vessel MSC Los Angeles, a 6,039 TEU containership.
