Peru and Guatemala Sign Memorandum of Port Cooperation

The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC), through the National Port Authority (APN), took a new step to strengthen international cooperation in the sector by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Port Commission of Guatemala.

This instrument aims to consolidate cooperation between both port authorities to promote a more modern, efficient, and sustainable port system, through the development of joint initiatives and the exchange of management experiences.

In this scenario, Peru and Guatemala will coordinate actions in areas such as port governance, energy transition, decarbonization, waste management, circular economy, digital transformation, innovation, port protection and security, as well as the integration between ports and cities, in accordance with their respective competencies and regulatory frameworks.

The ceremony was attended by the Chairman of the APN Board, Abel Alvarado Huertas; the Director General of the National Port Commission of Guatemala, Leonel Molina Cabrera; and representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The agreement is the result of a process of technical and institutional coordination between both entities, with the support of the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

As part of this alliance, both countries will promote the exchange of information, technical tools, protocols, and best practices, in addition to developing training programs, workshops, conferences, research, and specialist exchanges to strengthen the capacities of the port sector.

With this initiative, the MTC strengthens Peru's presence in international port cooperation spaces and promotes the adoption of standards that contribute to improving the competitiveness of the National Port System, fostering an infrastructure prepared to respond to the challenges of maritime trade and future logistics.
