A fatal accident occurred aboard the Malta-flagged Ro-Ro cargo vessel Delphine at the port of Zeebrugge, Belgium, on the evening of 16 June, claiming the life of a dockworker and prompting a criminal investigation by the Belgian authorities.
According to the local news media, the incident occurred at around 6 pm local time while cargo loading operations were underway. The vessel was being loaded with semi-trailers and containers destined for overseas transport.
The victim, who was working as a signalman, became trapped between a stack of containers and the vessel's side structure during the operation. Initial findings by the Labour Inspectorate suggest that a towing vehicle operating on board struck the container stack, causing it to shift and fatally crush the worker.
The dockworker died at the scene as a result of his injuries.
Following the incident, the officials launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident and whether all applicable workplace safety and employee welfare regulations were followed during the loading operation.
As part of the investigation, the Delphine was temporarily detained while maritime police, labour inspectors, and a forensic expert conducted examinations on board. Later, the vessel was released, and departed from Zeebrugge en route to Dublin, Ireland.
