A sinkhole occurred meters from Talcamávida Station, on the San Rosendo to Talcahuano branch line, Bio Bio Region, interrupting train traffic on the railway track.
According to information provided by EFE Sur, the subsidence was caused by the rains and affected two railway tracks used by trains circulating along the aforementioned route.
The situation led the company to activate a contingency plan to provide coverage for passengers using the Corto Laja service.
"Due to this afternoon's rains, a few meters from Talcamávida station, a sinkhole occurred next to the railway track, affecting one of the two train lines," the company indicated.
"As a result, EFE Sur suspended the circulation of both passenger and cargo trains, interrupting the operation of the Corto Laja," stated the subsidiary.
Meanwhile, on the central line, the bad weather front caused another sinkhole on the Diguillín bridge, near the town of General Cruz, Ñuble Region, disabling railway movement in that sector.
EFE reported that work is underway at that location to recover the embankment with works that include protective riprap, filling of the affected sector, and the construction of channels for water evacuation with the aim of reinforcing the infrastructure and preventing future subsidence.
The state-owned company estimated that these works will extend for approximately one week, and once the safety reviews are completed, train circulation will resume on the section.
