Hannibal, the Contship Group's multimodal transport operator, continues to expand its intermodal network in Europe with the announcement of a new connection between the Group's inland terminal in Melzo (RHM, Rail Hub Milano) and the Europoort Rotterdam terminal.
The combination of rail connections, short-sea, and deep-sea shipping services makes Europoort Rotterdam a vital multimodal hub for accessing major European logistics corridors.
It allows for the management of both containerized and conventional cargo flows, acting as a consolidation and distribution point for traffic destined for the Benelux countries, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the main markets of Northern Europe.
In this way, the Group has completed its operational coverage of the Port of Rotterdam terminals, where Contship, through its subsidiary Hannibal, now operates extensively in all major facilities: Moerdijk, RSC, Botlek, and, finally, Europoort.
This agreement allows the Group to offer its customers a wider range of available connections for transshipment services to the UK and Scandinavia, consolidating Hannibal's and RHM's role as a rail gateway to Northern Europe.
The new connection, operational since July 8, also ensures greater operational flexibility thanks to the availability of both lift-on/lift-off (lo-lo) and roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) solutions, adapting to the diverse transport needs of all European shippers.
The service, intended for semi-trailers, containers, and swap bodies, will operate as an open rail shuttle service. With six weekly trains, it will be able to transport up to 38 loading units. Specifically, departures from Italy are scheduled for Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from Melzo, and Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays from Europoort, with an approximate transit time of 24 hours. This service is carried out in collaboration with the operator SBB, responsible for the train's transport.
