Victoria International Container Terminal (VICT), an automated facility of International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) at the Port of Melbourne, is deploying four Kalmar automatic hybrid container carriers (ACC), following their commissioning and operational integration in recent weeks.
Kalmar executives attended the handover ceremony, including Sami Niiranen, President and CEO, along with VICT's management and operational staff.
The new container carriers are part of VICT's expansion program, which aims to increase annual capacity to over 1.6 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU), while promoting more efficient and sustainable terminal operations.
"These new container carriers strengthen our landside capabilities while supporting our long-term sustainability goals. This investment reflects our commitment to expanding terminal capacity, improving efficiency, and adopting technologies that reduce the environmental impact of our operations. We appreciate the successful collaboration with Kalmar, which has allowed us to set a high standard in Australian port operations," stated Bruno Porchietto, CEO of VICT.
ACC systems were designed to increase productivity by minimizing loading times. VICT and Kalmar collaborated on several customized improvements aimed at optimizing efficiency levels.
The hybrid ACCs feature a dual-box lifting capacity of up to 60 tons. They are equipped with lithium-ion battery systems that allow for energy recovery during operation, resulting in a 40% increase in energy efficiency and a reduction of up to 50 tons in carbon emissions per unit annually.
VICT is the only fully automated container terminal in the Southern Hemisphere. The commissioning of the equipment marks a new milestone in VICT's ongoing efforts to improve productivity and meet the needs of global trade.
