Saudi Arabia is seeking to build an international coalition to protect shipping in the Red Sea from Houthi attacks, two people familiar with the deliberations said. The composition of the coalition has not yet been finalized and is being discussed with dozens of countries, according to the sources.
The Iran-aligned Houthis announced on July 20 that they would impose a naval blockade on the country in the Red Sea in response to what they described as a Saudi siege of Yemen, an accusation that Riyadh has denied.
Since then, the militia claimed to have launched attacks against Saudi vessels in the area. Saudi Arabia responded with airstrikes against what it claims were Houthi military facilities in the Yemeni port of Hodeidah, used to threaten commercial shipping.
The blockade opened a new front against the United States and its allies in the broader war against Iran, expanding aggressions against oil tankers carrying energy and other supplies to waters beyond the Gulf and raising fuel prices.
