India's Ministry of External Affairs stated that it had summoned Russia's chargé d'affaires in New Delhi, Vladimir Ladanov, and expressed its 'grave concern' after a missile attack killed four Indian crew members aboard a vessel in the Black Sea, which was departing from the Ukrainian port of Odesa.
Ukraine claimed that Russia hit the Golden Leo, a Guinea-Bissau-flagged vessel operated by an Indian and Syrian crew, with three cruise missiles on Sunday, July 19, causing the deaths of 10 people.
Ladanov was asked to convey India's deep concern and was informed that attacks on commercial shipping and the resulting loss of civilian lives were 'unacceptable,' according to the statement.
'Such attacks undermine the safety and stability of international maritime trade,' the note issued by the Indian ministry stated.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that Moscow was in contact with India on the matter.
'We are explaining our position. The most important thing is that our armed forces are attacking - and will continue to attack - vessels involved in the transport of ammunition, weapons, and other material for the purposes of the Kyiv regime,' Peskov said.
The Golden Leo is owned by Ocean Grace Shipping Ltd, based in Mumbai, according to LSEG data.
India has also lost sailors in the Iran war and has lodged protests with both the United States and Iran over these losses.
