An inspection operation carried out within the port sector of Valparaíso, jointly by personnel from the National Customs Service, Investigative Police (PDI), and Maritime Police, with the support of the Seremi of Public Security, concluded with the apprehension of five people for violations of Law 20.000 and for outstanding arrest warrants.
The deployment, carried out on the night of Thursday, July 9, was attended by the Regional Director of Customs, Braulio Cubillos; the Head of the Valparaíso Port Crimes Brigade, Subprefect Víctor Vergara; the Maritime Governor of Valparaíso, Captain LT Carlos Cerda; and the Port Captain of Valparaíso, Frigate Captain LT Jacob Silva.
"The operation, which had the support of canine teams from Customs and the Maritime Authority, aimed to detect crimes within the port, as well as to verify that there were no undocumented individuals in the trucks," reported the Chilean Navy.
"The inspection, which involved more than 150 identity checks, resulted in three people arrested for violating Law 20.000 and two people who had outstanding arrest warrants. Of those arrested, three were cautioned, while those with outstanding arrest warrants will proceed to a detention control hearing," it added.
In this regard, the Maritime Governor of Valparaíso, Captain LT Carlos Cerda, indicated that "this procedure is part of public security, and the idea is to maintain this type of control in important places such as port facilities. Joint work is the key to achieving security in port facilities. We carried out more than 150 identity checks and had five arrests; which is a very good result in terms of prevention efforts."
For his part, the Regional Director of Customs, Braulio Cubillos, stated that "part of our function has to do with the safety of people; we have made progress in integrating organizations related to inspection, joining forces so that the community perceives that our attributions complement each other to achieve results like these."
In turn, the Head of the Valparaíso Port Crimes Brigade, Subprefect Víctor Vergara, mentioned that "it is undoubtedly a very important operation because it allows us to appreciate the work of all institutions within the port. It is a task that, as the Investigative Police, we wish to continue carrying out; since it had positive results, as five people were arrested."
"Our main work was to carry out identity checks on people circulating within the port, and additionally, work was done with the Immigration Police who carried out identity checks on foreign nationals," he added.
Once the inspection related to the terminals of the Port of Valparaíso concluded, the operation moved to the vicinity of Muelle Pratt, which led to the arrest of one person for consuming alcohol in a public place.
It is worth remembering that in the first days of July, the National Migration Service (Sermig) participated in the first migratory inspection carried out in the port facility of Valparaíso, an instance in which workers and employers of the concessionaires Terminal Portuario Valparaíso (TPV) and Terminal Pacífico Sur (TPS) were checked.
