The Aguadulce Industrial Port Society (SPIA) announced that it has begun handling the WSA5 service, with which Cosco Shipping Lines now connects Colombia, through Buenaventura, with Asia.
The first vessel to call at the dock of the Colombian port terminal was the Cosco Yantian, which has a capacity of 9,469 TEU.
The WSA5 service connects Asia with South America. From Chinese ports, the vessels covering this route call at Ensenada, Manzanillo, Lázaro Cárdenas, in Mexico, to continue through Buenaventura, in Colombia, and Guayaquil, Ecuador, to their final destination in Chancay, Peru. From there, a connection is established with the port complexes of Dalian, Ningbo, Shanghai, and Qingdao, in China.
Álvaro Otero, CEO of SPIA, said that the arrival of the new service "confirms that SPIA continues to strengthen its position as a strategic hub and as a preferred partner for shipping companies seeking high standards of productivity, reliability, and service on the Colombian Pacific coast."
SPIA, it is worth mentioning, is one of the three terminals that handle containers in the city of Buenaventura, which is the gateway for Asian products imported by Colombia and for exports from that country destined for the Far East market.
The WSA5 service arrived in the port area of Buenaventura in February last year, being launched - at the time - at the terminal of the Regional Port Society of Buenaventura.
Buenaventura and its terminals, it should be noted, are the main gateway for products that Colombia imports from the Far East and, similarly, are the departure point for that country's exports to the Asian market.
