Over 500 Bolivian trucks remain stranded at the border due to reduced operating hours at the Colchane Border Complex in Chile. Transporters reported that, since July 1st, the Chilean facility suspended its night operations to serve exclusively between 08:00 and 20:00 hours.
This measure, coupled with dispatching through a single lane, which takes between 15 and 20 minutes per vehicle, has slowed the flow of cargo to Chilean ports, generating kilometer-long queues and waiting times of up to five days, keeping the international sector on alert.
In this regard, the president of the Departmental Chamber of Transport (Cadetran) of La Paz, Álvaro Ayllón, warned that the restriction creates a bottleneck at the border and affects the logistics chain of Bolivian foreign trade, in addition to exposing transporters to fines for delays in the delivery of goods.
Drivers indicated that the line of trucks exceeds three kilometers and that many have been there for several days enduring low temperatures while waiting to cross the border.
The Provincial Presidential Delegation of Tamarugal reported that the suspension of night service is due to repair work at the border complex and that the measure will be in effect until November 30th.
For its part, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bolivia reported that it is carrying out diplomatic and coordination efforts with the authorities of the Republic of Chile with the aim of expediting international transit at the Colchane–Pisiga Border Complex.
