China's first zero-carbon emission intermodal sea-river route has officially commenced operations, with a 10,000-ton all-electric container ship departing from Jiaxing Port bound for Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, both in eastern China's Zhejiang Province.
Operated by Ningbo Ocean Shipping, the vessel is 127.8 meters long and 21.6 meters wide, with a capacity of 742 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units). Powered by 10 containerized batteries offering a total energy storage capacity of approximately 20,000 kWh, it is expected to save around 800 tons of fuel and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 2,000 tons annually.
Jiaxing Port is a key hub connecting Zhejiang's inland waterway system with its coastal maritime transport network, while Ningbo-Zhoushan Port ranks as the world's largest cargo volume port.
According to the Jiaxing maritime safety administration, the new route operates with zero fuel consumption and zero exhaust emissions, reducing approximately 60 kg of carbon dioxide per TEU transported. It offers exporters in the Yangtze River Delta a low-carbon option for transporting goods to global markets.
