DP World Ecuador and the Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral (ESPOL) have signed a strategic alliance to monitor and evaluate the marine biodiversity associated with the Living Seawalls structures installed in the expansion of the Posorja Deepwater Port. The initiative integrates scientific research and port development, incorporating nature-based solutions within maritime infrastructure.
As part of the project, the piles of the expanded pier have been designed with textures that replicate natural habitats to favor the presence of marine organisms. DP World allocated an approximate investment of USD 30,000 for the acquisition of scientific equipment to be used by ESPOL researchers, with the support of the Sydney Institute of Marine Science. The study includes field monitoring, laboratory analysis, and underwater image processing.
The initiative strengthens sustainability criteria in the development of port infrastructure and generates relevant information for the environmental management of marine environments. Likewise, it positions the Port of Posorja as a regional benchmark in the integration of innovation, scientific research, and port growth, promoting a balanced relationship between logistical activity, maritime transport, and the conservation of coastal ecosystems.
