Vietnamese Crew Member Dies from Hemorrhagic Fever in Talcahuano

The Vietnamese crew member who was hospitalized at Las Higueras Hospital in Talcahuano (Chile) died after being admitted to the medical facility with a case of hemorrhagic fever. The information was confirmed by the Regional Health Secretary of Bio Bio, Isabel Rojas, who ruled out an Ebola infection as the cause of death.

The local authority reported that "the patient of Vietnamese origin who arrived in Talcahuano on Sunday night (July 26) as an emergency and was evaluated for presenting a clinical picture of hemorrhagic fever under study, prompting the activation of a health protocol, died last night (Tuesday, July 28) despite the therapeutic efforts made by the health teams."

Furthermore, Rojas added that "samples were sent to the Public Health Institute (ISP), which has already ruled out Ebola virus infection, and diagnostic confirmation regarding other diseases under study is awaited to lift the vessel's free pratique, allowing it to continue its journey to the next port."

It should be noted that the vessel NV Athena, which arrived in Chilean waters from Singapore, remains in Talcahuano Bay, and its crew is in preventive quarantine until authorities allow them to depart. No other symptomatic seafarers have been reported.
