The Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the U.S. Coast Guard, and other associated federal agencies conducted an operation that seized narcotics from an oil tanker in the Port of Los Angeles with an approximate value of 6.4 million dollars.
During a boarding of the vessel, identified as Aquatravesia, a Coast Guard narcotics detection dog alerted the team to the possible presence of contraband, identifying 226.7 kilograms of cocaine.
"This operation highlights Homeland Security Investigations' (HSI) strong commitment to combating transnational crime and protecting the United States from illicit narcotics," commented Eddy Wang, Special Agent in Charge of HSI in Los Angeles.
"HSI's rapid response and investigative expertise were instrumental in identifying and seizing over 226 kilograms of cocaine destined for our communities. We remain committed to prosecuting those who attempt to exploit our ports and transportation systems, and to collaborating with our partners to disrupt criminal organizations that threaten public safety," Wang added.
"The success of this narcotics seizure is a testament to the coordinated efforts of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to dismantle drug traffickers' operations under our respective competencies and responsibilities," said Captain Stacey Crecy, Commander of the Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach.
"Thanks to excellent coordination, we effectively apprehended the suspect and removed the contraband from the vessel to protect the maritime transportation system and facilitate commerce as quickly as possible," Crecy complemented.
