US forces fired on and disabled the cargo vessel Lian Star, which was traveling in international waters in the Gulf of Oman on 29 May. It remains unclear whether there were any injuries, casualties, or damage to the cargo.
The Lian Star was heading toward an Iranian port when it was intercepted. US forces (under CENTCOM) reportedly issued 20 warnings to the vessel, ordering it to change course due to its violation of the blockade on Iran.
When the vessel failed to comply, a US aircraft fired a Hellfire missile into the engine room to disable it. The vessel was successfully disabled, but no information has been released regarding injuries or damage to the cargo.
CENTCOM and US forces stated that this is the fifth vessel they have disabled since imposing the blockade on Iran.
The incident comes one day after President Donald Trump posted on social media claiming diplomatic progress and stating he was close to reopening the Strait of Hormuz with "no tolls" and "unrestricted traffic."
The Lian Star is a Gambian-flagged general cargo vessel built in 1993. It has a length of 71 metres, a beam of 11.5 metres, and a gross tonnage of 480.
