The crude oil tanker Smyrtos was detained by Britain in a joint operation with the French Navy. The vessel, which is sanctioned by both the EU and the UK, is currently being held in Britain pending verification of its documents and certification.
The seizure was carried out in the early hours of 14 June. Official reports indicate that armed resistance was anticipated during the boarding. The operation was conducted by a Royal Marines/National Crime Agency boarding party, supported by French naval units, the Royal Navy ships HMS Somerset and HMS Ledbury, a Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft, and helicopters.
The action was taken in accordance with Article 110 of UNCLOS, which gives warships the right to board a vessel if it is suspected of not having valid registration in any country.
The vessel was subsequently taken to an anchorage while its documents and certification are verified. Its safety-related equipment, including machinery, navigation systems, and pollution control measures, will also be inspected.
It has not been disclosed whether the vessel's cargo will be seized.
The Smyrtos is a Cameroonian-flagged oil tanker built in 2009. The vessel is 243.8 metres long, with a beam of 42 metres and a gross tonnage of 58,667
