A section inside the Port of La Guaira was established as an improvised morgue to receive the bodies of the victims left by the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes that occurred in Venezuela on June 24, tremors that - so far - caused the death of 2,295 people and left more than 11,000 injured.
The scale of the tragedy, which devastated the city of La Guaira, caused the collapse of health services, forcing the local port facility to be used as a point to receive some of the deceased. A considerable number of coffins were stacked in the area, while dozens of body bags remained on the ground.
According to the DW agency, doctors and forensic technicians are working outdoors with the cadavers, under tarpaulins supported by four poles. Some of the bodies are covered with lime, a procedure that some experts deemed unnecessary. Meanwhile, at the Port of La Guaira, death certificates and cremation authorizations continue to be issued. A truck identified as a "Special Hospital Waste Unit" is used to remove autopsy waste.
According to estimates by the United Nations (UN), the number of people missing in the natural disaster could reach close to 50,000, which is why the organization announced that it will supply 10,000 body bags.
