The Ukrainian Port Authority confirmed the sinking of the commercial vessel Golden Leo, flying the flag of Guinea-Bissau, off the coast of the Ukrainian port of Odesa, in the Black Sea, one week after being hit by an attack by Russian forces.
The agency detailed that the aggression resulted in nine crew members dead and eight safely evacuated.
The statement detailed that the vessel, which had departed from the Port of Chornomorsk with a cargo of corn, suffered considerable damage when it was bombarded by Russian forces on July 19.
The ship was transiting through a coastal corridor under Ukrainian supervision, heading towards Romania.
The port authority stated that the Russian action against the vessel "violated the norms of international maritime law" and endangered the lives of the crew.
At the time, a Reuters witness in Odesa saw smoke rising from a large ship off the coast. Moscow has not made public comments about the attack.
In the fifth year of the war, Russia has intensified its attacks in recent weeks against the deep-water ports in southern Ukraine, from where much of the country's grain and other strategic cargo is managed.
It is worth noting that the Ministry of External Affairs of India stated that it had summoned Russia's chargé d'affaires in New Delhi, Vladimir Ladanov, and expressed its "grave concern" after the attack killed four Indian crew members aboard the Golden Leo.
