The Antigua and Barbuda-flagged cargo vessel Olympus Trader collided with the yacht Niddasche after the drunken captain attempted to manoeuvre the vessel in the Danish port of Korsør on 8 June. The incident caused significant damage to the yacht and port infrastructure, but no injuries were reported.
According to reports, the 104.23-meter cargo vessel arriving from Wismar was manoeuvring without a pilot when its stern struck the yacht, knocking down the yacht's entire mast and rigging. The yacht owners, a couple in their seventies, were aboard and jumped into the water at the time and remained unharmed.
Following this, the cargo vessel then struck the quay, damaging port infrastructure and toppling three lamp posts. The yacht's damage is estimated at 100,000 euros (approximately US$115,000).
Authorities boarded the vessel and conducted alcohol and drug tests on the Russian chief officer, who tested positive. The vessel was subsequently detained for inspection, and the chief officer was charged under Danish maritime law before being released following a blood test. Reports indicate he could face a prison sentence of up to two years.
The Maritime Accident Investigation Board has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
