Axpo marked a new milestone with the first LNG bunkering operation for a cruise ship in the Port of Naples, for Princess Cruises' Sun Princess, an important moment in the development of alternative fuel services for maritime transport and on the path to reducing emissions in Italian ports.
The ship-to-ship operation was carried out with the Green Zeebrugge barge, already used in LNG bunkering activities initiated in Genoa at the end of 2025. This result was made possible thanks to collaboration with the Port Authority of Naples, the Central Tyrrhenian Sea Port System Authority, the Terminal Napoli SpA Corporation, and Carnival Corp, which contributed to the coordination of operational and authorization activities.
The initiative was presented at the Naples Maritime Terminal Station during a meeting attended by Eliseo Cuccaro, president of the Central Tyrrhenian Sea Port System Authority; Admiral Giuseppe Aulicino, commander of the Port of Naples, among other officials.
"This transaction represents an especially significant step for the development of the LNG market in the Italian maritime sector. For Axpo, contributing to infrastructure, services, and skills in the field of small-scale LNG means strengthening a strategic area of its business, while also supporting the sustainable evolution of the national port and logistics system," said Simone Demarchi, CEO of Axpo Italia.
Gruppo Finsea celebrated adding this event to its portfolio in the LNG segment. After assisting in the first bunkering operations carried out in Italy in 2020, it now followed with the supply of LNG to the vessel Sun Princess, acting as shipping agents on behalf of Axpo Italia.
"An activity that led us to participate in the coordination of operations and in supporting all operational phases. It was an intense day, which makes us especially proud: we had the opportunity to accompany the Axpo Group in a project built with tenacity over the years, thanks to continuous work with institutions and operators of the port system," stated Gruppo Finsea.
