Susan Renner, American Cruise Lines' chair and treasurer, acted as the godmother.
June 22, 2026
American Maverick was celebrated in Newport, Rhode Island festivities that included passengers on the ship's inaugural nine-day "New England Islands" cruise, sailing roundtrip from Providence.
They were joined by community partners and more than 50 employees from American Cruise Lines' headquarters in Guilford, Connecticut.
With everyone gathered on the top deck, godmother Susan Renner, American's board chair and treasurer, smashed the bottle. A traditional New England lobster bake followed at Fort Adams State Park just steps from where the ship was docked.
"We set the bar high for ourselves with American Maverick and were surprised to see that we set the bar for the rest of the river cruise industry in the process," said Charles B. Robertson, president & CEO of American Cruise Lines. "The American Maverick is the new standard by which others should follow and with eight more ships under construction, shows that the US river cruise market will lead the way."
The festivities closely followed the May inaugural for American Encore, the first riverboat christened in Idaho at Lewiston's new cruise dock.
The 130-passenger American Maverick has four decks, all-balcony staterooms, including singles and suites, plus spacious lounges including a top deck lounge with a walking track. A main restaurant, a casual cafe, a chart room and fitness center round out the amenities.
American Maverick is scheduled to be followed by the deliveries of sister vessels American Ranger, American Mariner and American Navigator over the next year.
Established 50 years ago, American Cruise Lines operates more overnight cruises on domestic itineraries than any other company. This year, as the US celebrates its 250th birthday on July 4, American has a host of dedicated activities on every sailing.
Shipboard programming includes patriotric videos, special ceremonies honoring veterans, a 250th-inspired game show, daily announcements of US historical trivia, and patriotic red, white and blue-themed cocktail parties and desserts.
Shoreside activities and prime viewing for Fourth of July fireworks in some destinations are other highlights.
