The AIDAsol recently celebrated 15 years of service with AIDA Cruises, having entered operation on March 31, 2011. As the fifth vessel in the company's Sphinx-class fleet, this 71,000-ton ship was constructed at Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany.
According to the shipyard, the AIDAsol's design emphasizes passenger comfort and environmental responsibility. The vessel accommodates 2,174 passengers and includes a large number of cabins with private balconies alongside a 2,500-square-meter atrium. Meyer Werft highlighted the ship's focus on sustainability and energy efficiency, incorporating new technologies to reduce fuel consumption.
A notable innovation was the AIDAsol becoming the first ship in AIDA's fleet equipped with a shore power connection, enabling the vessel to shut down its engines while docked in port.
Following delivery, the AIDAsol underwent its christening ceremony at the Port of Kiel in Germany on April 9, 2011. The celebration featured a free concert, fireworks display, and laser show, drawing more than 45,000 spectators. Bettina Zwickler served as the vessel's godmother, selected through a public contest organized by AIDA Cruises.
The ship subsequently embarked on its maiden voyage, which included visits to destinations throughout Northern Europe.
In 2026, the AIDAsol returned to Northern European waters, offering a series of five- to 12-night cruises departing from the Port of Hamburg. These itineraries feature stops in Scandinavia, the British Isles, Western Europe, and the Bay of Biscay.
Later in 2026, the vessel will undertake a 126-night world cruise scheduled to visit 43 ports across four continents.
Looking ahead, the AIDAsol is set to undergo a major refurbishment in late 2027 as part of the AIDA Evolution refit program. Introduced in 2025, this initiative aims to modernize AIDA's Sphinx-class vessels through updates to public areas and staterooms. The AIDAsol's refurbishment will include new dining venues, refreshed interior design, and updated cabin accommodations.
