The former port infrastructure of Impala Terminals in Barrancabermeja will be reactivated under the name Puerto Voluntad, as part of a strategic project that seeks to leverage the existing facility.
The reopening will occur on July 1, 2026, and the initiative will connect the Barrancabermeja Refinery, the Magdalena River, and the La Dorada–Chiriguaná train line to ensure the country's energy supply.
With approximately 50 hectares, over 1,200 meters of dock, and a capacity for 850,000 barrels, the hub will reduce logistics costs and optimize cargo transport. Additionally, it will boost the local economy by hiring labor and suppliers from Magdalena Medio and Gran Santander.
It is worth remembering that the so-called Impala Port of Barrancabermeja is inactive because the company decided to cease operations due to the lack of effective navigability of the Magdalena River, which made its logistics model unviable. The infrastructure became underutilized, and the company moved its fleet to the Paraguay–Paraná Waterway.
Edwin Palma, Minister of Mines and Energy of Colombia, stated that "what until recently was called Impala Port, will now be called Puerto Voluntad. We are supporting this very good news for the region and for the country. The reopening or renewed operation of this port will generate employment, development, and all thanks to a decision to reactivate the railway."
"The train will also arrive here and connect the train with this port, that is, with fluvial transport, with the operation of the refinery and, even, in the context of the El Niño phenomenon, it will be very important not only for Barrancabermeja and the region, but for the entire country," the authority affirmed.
"We are visiting this port that has been stopped for about 11 months and we hope that soon, hand in hand with Ecopetrol, operations can be reactivated, and thus continue developing this city, the region, and the country," Palma indicated.
