MSC, Maersk, CMA CGM, and Hapag-Lloyd are the four shipping companies that, together, maintain 93.3% of the capacity deployed on maritime routes between Europe and South America.
According to Alphaliner data for April, Asian shipping companies continue to have a smaller share in these routes, with Cosco Shipping and Ocean Network Express (ONE) being the only ones operating between Europe and the South American West and East Coasts with a combined market share of 6.2%, as reported by El Estrecho Digital.
According to the analyst's figures, 99 container ships operated in April on routes between Europe and both South American coasts with an accumulated capacity of 710,530 TEU, equivalent to 2.1% of the global container fleet.
In particular, the Europe-East Coast of South America route had 49 vessels and a capacity of 369,573 TEU, slightly above the Europe-West Coast of South America route, which registered 50 vessels and 340,957 TEU. The average size of vessels on the route to the East Coast was 7,542 TEU, compared to 6,819 TEU on the route to the West Coast.
MSC became the market-leading shipping company on the Europe-East Coast of South America segment by increasing its year-on-year capacity by 4.1%, reaching a 34.8% share, displacing Maersk from the first place.
The Danish shipping company reduced its capacity for this route by 13% year-on-year after transferring a series of Cap San class vessels with space for 10,589 TEU to the Asia-Latin America route.
